An analysis of social mobility in contemporary French literature that offers a new perspective on figures who move between social classes. Social climbers have often been the core characters of novels. Their position between traditional tiers in society makes them touchstones for any political and literary moment, including our own. Morgane Cadieu’s study looks at a certain kind of social climber in contemporary French literature whom she calls the parvenant. Taken from the French term parvenu, which refers to one who is newly arrived, a parvenant is a character who shuttles between social groups. A parvenant may become part of a new social class but devises literary ways to come back, constantly undoing any fixed idea of social affiliation. Focusing on recent French novels and autobiographies, On Both Sides of the Tracks speaks powerfully to issues of emancipation and class. Cadieu offers a fresh critical look at tales of social mobility in the work of Annie Ernaux, Kaoutar Harchi, Michel Houellebecq, Édouard Louis, and Marie NDiaye, among others, shedding fascinating light on upward mobility today as a formal, literary problem.
Literature and Cartography
The relationship of texts and maps, and the mappability of literature, examined from Homer to Houellebecq. Literary authors have frequently called on elements of cartography to ground fictional space, to visualize sites, and to help readers get their bearings in the imaginative world of the text. Today, the convergence of digital mapping and globalization has spurred a cartographic turn in literature. This book gathers leading scholars to consider the relationship of literature and cartography. Generously illustrated with full-color maps and visualizations, it offers the first systematic overview of an emerging approach to the study of literature. The literary map is not merely an illustrative guide but represents a set of relations and tensions that raise questions about representation, fiction, and space. Is literature even mappable? La parution du Monde des non-A d’Alfred Van Vogt, en 1945, a éveillé l’intérêt d’un grand nombre de personnes pour une discipline à laquelle le livre se réfère explicitement: la Sémantique générale. Cette discipline se fonde sur un système non-aristotélicien formulé par Alfred Korzybski (1879-1950) dans son grand livre Science and Sanity (1933). Pour la première fois, paraît en français une anthologie d’écrits d’Alfred Korzybski, permettant de ne plus évaluer le vaste ’territoire’ de la Sémantique générale à l’aune des seules ’cartes’, quelquefois approximatives, qu’en ont dressées des auteurs comme A.E. Van Vogt, mais aussi Gregory Bateson, Gaston Bachelard ou Henri Laborit.
